Pre Winter Tire Check List
STAY PREPARED NATURE IS PREDICTING A COLD WINTER
The Farmers Almanac is predicting that the winter in Wilmington Delaware (north east coast) is going to be nasty. The following lists a few hints from mother nature that predict a tougher winter.
1. Oak trees are producing an abundance of acorns (seems everyone is talking about this one online)
2. Geese and ducks are migrating early
3. Yellow jacks have made their nests extra deep this year.
4. Squirrel activity is overly active
5. Spiders are building larger webs
6. Pines are producing an abundance of pine cones.
So what does this mean? Well. first off you should probably take these signs with a grain of salt. Nobody really knows what’s going to happen. Whether you believe the long term prediction or not its a risk you shouldn’t take.
Your tires need to be checked to ensure they can handle the upcoming snow, sleet and ice. Although one of the most important aspects of your vehicle, they are one of the last things people usually think about. Based upon our past experience with tire service, we’ve discovered several ways to keep you safe during the toughest driving season.
CHECK THE AIR PRESSURE
Under-inflated tires are one of the most common causes of costly tire failure. But, luckily checking the air pressure is one of the easiest things you can do. The proper pressure level is printed on the tire so there’s no guess-work. Under-inflated tires make you more prone to getting into an accident because of poor handling, and they also contribute to a severe loss in gas mileage. Low tire pressure also causes uneven tire wear which leads to expensive, premature replacement.
CHECK THE CONDITION
Winter driving is hazardous enough without adding to the problem by riding on bad tires. Signs that your tires will fail soon are; bulging, cracks, cuts or splits in the sidewall. Additionally, look for any worn spots where the steel cord is coming through the rubber. Any of these tell-tale signs will indicate that it’s high-time to replace your tires. Don’t get caught in a storm with tires like these. Also, be sure to take a good look at the tread and check the edges closely. If you see any uneven wear, it’s a sure sign that your wheels are out of alignment and need the help of a trained mechanic to set them straight again.
TIRE BALANCE
Pay close attention while you’re driving. If you notice any shaking or vibration in the steering wheel, it could indicate that your tires have lost their wheel weights and are out of balance. This is an easy and inexpensive repair, but again, this is something that only a trained service technician can do properly.
ROTATE YOUR TIRES
To ensure that all your tires wear at the same rate, it’s recommended that you have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. Excessive wear of your tires should be addressed by replacing them all at the same time. However, at the very minimum, you should replace them in pairs. In a front-wheel drive vehicle, the front tires do most of the work and should be replaced first, if necessary.
